This list started out as my 10 essentials list for being an artist. But then it morphed. After thinking about each essential, I expanded on them with some description. And then the descriptions started to grow and encompass more than the essentials but that’s okay. It made me think about what I need and made me grateful for being an artist!
This list is in no particular order.
1. paint: acrylics, thick and fluid types, all the primary colors plus turquoise, purple, white and black
2. sense of play: fun, experimentation, this includes exercise, yoga, keeping a youthful outlook
3. notebook/sketch pad: writing down what’s in my head, documenting what I see, writing dreams, drawing images
4. water: Staying hydrated, being able to see it, feel it, ride on it, spray it on my paintings
5. tools: spray bottle, brushes, string, sponges, stamps, my fingers, paper, wood, canvas
6. light: emotional light, being around things/people that lift me up and keep my spirit light, and physical light so I can see what I’m doing and seeing the true color of my paintings!
7. inspiration: being in nature, reading books, questioning, mindfulness, seeking ideas
8. community: friends, family, fellowship with creative souls, people who buy my art
9. goals/intentions: for creating art, marketing, being a better person, living authentically
10. gratitude: for all of the above
If I have these things, I’m pretty happy!
What are some of your essentials?

K, I like your list and I know you could do ten.
I got the card – oh, honestly, it’s like holding jewels in my hands – your colors, the vibrance of your design. Essentials: family – the noise of it, the support, the constant input that spurs active thinking, the chaos, out of which comes inspiration. Windows: through which leaves and birds and wind and cloud can be seen. Private land, for the quiet buffer and the beauty. Past and future -=
I probably could do ten . . .
